Pakistan pays courtesy call to URA

By Irene Kabakama

In an effort to foster cooperation, the High Commissioner of Pakistan, His Excellency Muhammad Hassan Wazir, and his deputy, Abdul Moshin Khan Bilal, paid a courtesy visit to Commissioner General John Musinguzi last Friday.

Throughout the engagement, discussions concentrated on shared interests, prospects for collaboration and the potential to increase trade between Uganda and Pakistan.

Mr. Musinguzi interested the team in investing in Uganda, highlighting the incentivized investment environment.

“Uganda’s policy is deliberate on increasing industries, and this is a good area to encourage the Pakistani community to venture into since the incentives are good,” he said.

He expressed his willingness to support the community in any tax-related challenges.

Mr. Wazir expressed his readiness to promote trade between the two countries and asked for URA’s support on the same.

Abel Kagumire, Commissioner Customs-URA, appreciated Pakistan for supporting URA in developing the database for used motor vehicles and complying with the ban on importing vehicles that are older than 15 years. He pledged more support for the country in the area of trade facilitation.

Sarah Chelangat, the commissioner of domestic taxes, called for more engagements to exchange tax knowledge, discuss issues faced by Pakistani investors, and share views on how to best serve them.

Inorder to address the challenge of double taxation, Stella Nyapendi, the Ag. Commissioner for Legal Services and Board Affairs, raised the possibility of establishing a double taxation agreement with Uganda.

This visit underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement and strengthening bilateral relations.

The meeting served as a platform for exchanging ideas and perspectives, fostering an environment of open dialogue, and promoting collaboration for the greater good.
