URA takes tax education gospel to Manafwa district

By Francis Mawanda

The tax education team in collaboration with the Mbale Domestic Taxes office, held a full-day camp in Butiru to educate, register and address the traders’ concerns. Butiru Town Council, situated in Manafwa district, is a rapidly growing economic centre although its traders knew little to nothing about taxes.

Charles Bwayo, the chairman of the Butiru Traders Association, encouraged his members to engage URA and learn all they can about taxes.

“This is our chance to voice all of our concerns as this is a great opportunity to learn from URA officials. I thank URA for providing this opportunity to learn about taxes,” said Bwayo.

Samuel Kanakulya, a URA tax education officer, informed the traders that paying taxes is a simple way to support the cause of rescuing our country from economic begging.

Kanakulya guided the traders through TIN registration, the significance of having a TIN and eligibility to won a TIN, the various tax types that URA collects, and the rights and obligations of the taxpayers.

He also differentiated between taxes that URA collects and other revenue charges that are levied by the local council.

The traders requested URA to consider setting up an office nearer to seve them since Mbale, the area office, is quite a distance for them. In the meantime, Kanakulya advised the taxpayers to contact URA through alternative channels so that they get the timely assistance required.

“In order to get assistance about taxes, you can contact us through our toll-free numbers of 0800-117000 or 0800-217000, or you can chat with us on WhatsApp number 0772140000 and an officer will be on stand-by to respond,” noted Kanakulya. Additionally, he committed to conduct more taxpayer engagements such as Tax Katale in order to build more tax knowledge and awareness amongst the Butiru business community.

Isaac Khauka, an officer in Mbale pointed out Butiru’s proximity to the Lwakhakha border post and cautioned traders against smuggling due so that they don’t bare the severe consequences that would follow if they are caught.

“While Butiru is a few kilometers from the Lwakhakha border, I urge you to avoid smuggling because not only are the consequences and penalties severe, but it also affects all Ugandan citizens,” said Khauka and urged the traders to always contact the authorities if they suspect someone of engaging in smuggling.

Bwayo further called upon his colleagues to get involved in their tax matters because it is a crucial element that contributes to a successful business.
