The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has destroyed more than 100 tons of contraband goods that lacked Digital Tax Stamps (DTS). The destruction took place on 30th April 2025 at Luweero Industries Ltd, a government-approved destruction facility in Nakasongola District.
The contraband included juices, soft drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and cement, were all impounded for failing to meet tax compliance and health safety standards.
According to Mugema Stephen, the URA Enforcement Officer, the destruction was part of URA’s mandate to enforce tax laws and safeguard consumers.
“As URA, we are tasked with a duty to collect revenue for national development. Goods without Digital Tax Stamps indicate non-compliance. DTS is also a safety measure since goods that are not certified by UNBS cannot be stamped,” said Mugema.
He added that such enforcement actions help maintain a level trading field in the market by preventing unfair competition from non-compliant traders.
Mugema also urged business operators to adhere to the DTS requirements to avoid financial losses and legal repercussions. He appealed to the public to avoid consuming unstamped goods and to report any violators to the URA.
