Malaba Joint operation busts smuggled phones and accessories

By Jackson Nambula Andrew

In a successful operation, the URA Malaba Enforcement, in collaboration with Busia Enforcement and other security stakeholders, intercepted a Prado TX UAL 582F loaded with smuggled phones and phone accessories from Kenya. The joint team received credible intel on October 16th at 10:00 am and swiftly swung into action.

Acting on the information, the team Malaba set up a perimeter and ambush at Kimwanga traffic checkpoint while the Busia team provided backup ensuring the suspect vehicle didn’t escape. The team later on received a tip-off about the heavily loaded Prado. They swiftly moved in, finding the Prado already in the hands of Traffic Police at Tororo-Mbale road.

The Prado was handed over to Malaba Enforcement for verification, and the driver was apprehended at Magodesi police post. Initially, the driver was tricked into branching to the police post, where he found himself handcuffed. Meanwhile, a team of security personnel trailed the intercepted vehicle to Malaba enforcement but attempted to block it. The regional supervisor intervened, allowing the vehicle to proceed.

Upon arrival, the vehicle was jointly verified by all interested parties, revealing 17 packages loaded with smuggled phones and phone accessories. The goods and vehicle were seized, and the driver was arrested and forwarded to Nakawa for further management.

This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of team work and intelligence sharing in combating smuggling.
