The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) recently participated in the CBS PEWOSA Agri-business Expo in Masaka City clarifying tax regulations for the agricultural sector.
URA’s Tax Education Supervisor, Robert Lumanyika emphasized the authority’s mandate to collect revenue for public services like roads, healthcare, and education.
Lumanyika also highlighted the importance of obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN) which is free and instant.
“A TIN is required for government suppliers, motor vehicle transfers, and transactions exceeding UGX 10 million,” he explained.
During the expo, Lumanyika also clarified on key tax aspects like; Agricultural machinery and feeds as VAT-exempt. SACCOs do not pay taxes on their income. Individuals earning above UGX 2.82 million annually are subject to taxation. Counterfeit goods should be intercepted at One Stop Border Posts.
The Minister for Lukiiko, Protocol and General Duties in Katikkiro’s Office, Noah Kiyimba praised exhibitors for sharing knowledge with taxpayers.
“I call upon the agencies to sensitize the masses about what they do and enlighten them on the benefits. Most Ugandans are unaware about their rights and obligations in the development of the country,” said Kiyimba.
Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Buganda Kingdom, Owekitiibwa Hajji Hamis Kakomo, reiterated the need for sensitization to ensure tax compliance. He also urged farmers to engage in value addition to benefit from tax-free exports.
Meanwhile, the 3rd Edition of CBS PEWOSA Agri-business Expo attracted over 250 exhibitors showcasing various products. The event provided a platform for URA to engage with taxpayers to address their challenges and promote tax awareness.
