Uganda Revenue Authority is set to partner with Nation Media Group (NMG) to advance the tax education agenda. In a meeting held at Nakawa, the URA Commissioner General, John Musinguzi appreciated NMG’s partnership role in the revenue mobilization drive. He asked them to find cost-effective ways to creatively address the issue of tax education across their platforms in the new financial year.
Musinguzi further requested the visiting team to collaborate with the URA Communications team and develop a proposal that will change traders’ perceptions about taxes.
Additionally, Musinguzi informed NMG about the upcoming program to engage traders on EFRIS, the waiving of penalties and how the process for waiving will be conducted as per the presidential guidance.
He called upon the media partner to consistently educate taxpayers about EFRIS and how VAT is assessed to ensure conceptual understanding of the process. He asked them to provide momentum and good coverage for this initiative.
Suzan Nsibirwa, the recently appointed Managing Director of the NMG in Uganda offered URA a morning show on Spark TV, in the week of the EFRIS penalties waiver, to engage with the traders and communicate to all those who are still hesitant about embracing the EFRIS system.
She also encouraged URA to cultivate receptive behavior among taxpayers to understand that paying taxes is an obligation for them. She promised to work with the concerned team to develop a proposal that will embed the taxation culture in the traders’ DNA and way of doing business.
She added that this will help URA to meet the goal of getting this message to the targeted trading community in Uganda.
