Three remanded to Luzira over contraband

The Anti-corruption Corruption on Wednesday remanded a pilot and two others over alleged possession of prohibited goods and conveyance of prohibited goods.

The accused are Paul Wanjala Mesho a pilot, Kasirye Marvin Caleb and Olof Abraham Don.

In a charge sheet accessed by this platform, Paul Wanjala Mesho a pilot, and Kasirye Marvin Caleb were found in possession of 24 cartoons (50 bombas 200 sticks and 49 bombas ) of oris cigarettes with a dutiable value of UGX 8,241,834 contrary to section 200(d)(1) of the East African Customs Management Act.

It further states that Olof Abraham Don was found in conveyance of prohibited goods contrary to section 199(b) (111) of the East Africa Community Customs Act, 2004.

All the suspects denied the offences and were remanded to Luzira Prison up to Monday 08th 2024 for the hearing of their case.

According to URA’s Supervisor Prosecution, Baluku Ronald Masamba, the offences attract a fine of up to 50% of the dutiable value. He says that URA is in the fight against smuggling of prohibited goods into the country to protect the health and safety of Ugandans.
