URA engages MDAs on the automated deemed VAT process

By Irene Kabakama

Last week, the URA convened an engagement to sensitize government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies on the deemed VAT/VAT exemption process that has now been automated .

The new process, according to Phoebe Kankunda, the Manager of the Public Sector Office will commence on December 1st 2023 with the web form available on the Electronic Fiscal Receipting Invoicing Solution (EFRIS). Applicants will receive real-time notifications upon project activation, application submission, return and processing.

Kankunda added that the process will make it easier for contractors to apply for exemptions since the suppliers have been doing it on their behalf.

“It will also help to reduce revenue leakage since it is less time-consuming and has less room for error compared to the manual process,” said Kankunda.

The training attracted officials from various MDAs, including the Ministries of Education, Finance, Agriculture, and Animal Industry, the Electricity Regulatory Authority, the Private Sector Foundation Uganda, and the Uganda Investment Authority, among others.

Arthur Mumanyire, from the Ministry of Education and Sports, appreciated URA for the training, saying that it will help them work better with contractors to ensure tax exemptions.

He also requested URA to hold a similar engagement with suppliers to address their challenges.
