A bus of registration number 4662AE19 plying the Mutukula-Masaka route was intercepted in the wee hours of Sunday morning as it transported a number of assorted items to Kampala.
The interception according to customs officer Simon Sentalle Wasswa followed a tip-off from the in-charge Mutukula Enforcement of a bus that had loaded cargo and was heading to Masaka.
The team hit the road dividing into two groups with one manning the Sembabule road and another driving to Masaka via Kyotera road. This strategy proved successful as the bus was spotted a few kilometers from Kyotera town after which it was intercepted and driven to the URA offices in Masaka.
Upon verification, a number of assorted items were found including; over 200 pairs of ladies shoes, 64pieces of denim jeans, 58 pieces of cotton long sleeved t-shirts 35pieces of cotton short sleeved t-shirts, 10pcs of polycotton men jackets, 4pieces of polycotton barberry t-shirts, 24pieces of wink whitening lotion, 20pcs x 250mls of wink body oil 12pcs x 50g of wink face cream, 20 pieces of wink serum 7pcs of borak Kat rouge 540 perfumes and 19pcs of dirham wardi perfume.
Offence management has ensued immediately.
URA has continues to explore different technology initiatives like the use of Non-Intrusive Inspection that enables inspection of cargo without unloading. All of this in an effort to reduce on leakages that continue to frustrate mobilization of revenue.
