By Elizabeth Nakiru, Media Management

The URA enforcement team of West Nile jointly with security agencies of Uganda Police and UPDF executed an operation in Yumbe led by commander Amayo Douglas.

With support of 15 UPDF personnel and Uganda Police, the team combed the town of Yumbe targeting illicit fuel dealers and unaccustomed motorcycles. It was imperative to have a large force to deter any would be reprisals because of the aggressive nature of a group of unruly youth also known as Aringas in the community, reported Philip Ofubo, customs officer.

By close of business, the following merchandize was recovered: 37 motorcycles, 20 jerrycans x 20 litters of petrol, 15 bags x 25 kgs of rice, and  two apprehended suspects who were handed over to Yumbe Police for further management.

A similar operation was conducted in Padea and recovery of 7 numberless motorcycles, and 10 Jerrycans x 20 Ltrs of Nzuri Pure Vegetable Oil ensued.

The captured motorcycles will be sold to acquire immediate tax recoveries and  penalties.  Whereas the arrests and prosecutions of illicit fuel sellers is a deterrence and a measure aimed at crippling the vice and the returns thereof should be reflected in increased sales and importation by genuine and compliant fuel dealers.

URA is committed to doing more of these joint operations to ensure 100% compliance in the fuel sector and also level the market for all players.
