URA bridges knowledge gap in city suburbs

By Elizabeth Aine

The URA Tax Education Division, in collaboration with the URA Gayaza Liaison Office, recently launched a five-day awareness campaign focused on income tax in the underserved communities of Kiwenda and Majije.

Led by Akampa Wyclif from the Domestic Taxes Office, the team spent four days in Kiwenda and one in Majije, engaging local business owners, landlords, and residents through door-to-door visits and small group sessions. The primary aim was to demystify tax obligations related to PAYE, presumptive tax, and rental income.

“These areas had virtually no understanding of income tax,” said Akampa. “Many believed that property rates and trading licenses were the only taxes they owed. Our goal was to bridge that knowledge gap with patience and practical information.”

The response from the communities was overwhelmingly positive. Residents appreciated the personalized approach and welcomed the announcement of the new Gayaza Liaison Office, located at Mutasa City Mall in Kasangati, as a local point for tax services.

“We are happy that URA is now closer to us,” said a shop owner in Kiwenda. “But we need more opportunities to ask questions and learn about these taxes properly.”

During the campaign, dozens of TINs and assessments were issued, with many taxpayers pledging to pay and remain compliant. Notably, Mr. Tiku Mathew Amuda, a landlord with six rental units, requested a dedicated session for landlords.

“Many of us want to comply,” he said, “but we need clear guidance on our responsibilities, especially regarding rental income.”

This initiative highlighted a significant opportunity: structured, interactive engagements to make tax education simpler and more accessible. The campaign not only educated the community but also planted the seeds of compliance, encouraging growth with the right support.
