URA arrests two people in anti-smuggling operation in Apac

The URA team in Apac have arrested two individuals and seized 35 sacks of smuggled cigarettes in an anti-smuggling operation conducted last week.

According to URA, the operation was launched with the support of the Northern Regional Intelligence Liaison Officers (RILO) who shared information a suspected contraband consignment destined for Kampala via the Apac–Masindi Port ferry route.

A truck registration number UBG 541Y was intercepted. The suspects are currently in the custody of the URA intelligence office in Nakawa, and offence management is underway.

This operation underscores URA’s commitment to securing legitimate trade, closing revenue leakages and safeguarding public health.

Notably, the taxman recently destroyed 36.64 tons of illicit cigarettes, valued at UGX 1,684,107,271.
