The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has intensified its efforts in taxpayer education and revenue mobilization in Bugende, Makanga, Iringa, Butaswa, and Nabirumba—all under the Kamuli Domestic Taxes Station. This campaign, part of the Tujenge Uganda initiative, aims to expand the taxpayer register and promote voluntary compliance through a week-long outreach program.
Key activities included onboarding new town councils onto the taxpayer register, conducting door-to-door business assessments, registering new taxpayers, and engaging various sectors through targeted workshops. These workshops focused on educating business owners about tax calculations, the benefits of self-assessment, and the importance of timely compliance.
Patricia Elios Nakayiza, who led the Tax Education team, emphasised URA’s dedication to providing extended services and fostering strong relationships with taxpayers. She highlighted the importance of understanding different tax categories, staying informed through URA communications, and seeking professional tax guidance.
Local leaders, including Buyende Town Clerk Mr. Faruk Mwiru and Makanga Business Community Chairman Mr. Beebwa Yazib, expressed strong support for the initiative. They encouraged local traders to pay taxes, conduct self-assessments, and obtain trading licenses to legitimize their businesses.
They also called on URA to maintain fairness and professionalism, especially in rapidly growing towns like Buyende and Makanga.
Throughout the week, the URA team conducted compliance checks, verified Payment Registration Numbers, and generated presumptive tax assessments.
These efforts aim to boost compliance as the end of the financial year approaches.
The campaign is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of the taxpayer register and assist the Kamuli Domestic Taxes Station in achieving its monthly presumptive tax target.
