URA explains tax matters to students in Kiryandongo

By Francis Mawanda

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Tax Education team has conducted outreach sessions in Bweyale, Kiryandongo District, focusing on teaching the younger generation about taxation, to foster a tax-compliant society.

Students from Bweyale Public Secondary School and Bweyale Senior Secondary School learnt that taxes are a fundamental aspect of civilization. “The price we all pay for civilization is tax,” said Ziadi Kakeeto, the Ag.Supervisor of Tax Education Outreach in the mid-western region. “If we want to live in a civilized nation, we must pay our taxes without fail.”

Kakeeto elaborated on the different types of taxes, identifying who is obligated to pay them and who is exempt. He urged students to become ambassadors for the country’s development by encouraging their parents to comply with tax regulations and by becoming responsible taxpayers when they transition from school to adulthood.

“You are the future of our nation,” he emphasized. “Your actions will impact Uganda’s future. To facilitate our nation’s development, you must be diligent in paying taxes.”

In response to a question from a student at Bweyale Senior Secondary School, Kakeeto clarified the difference between taxes collected by URA and those gathered by local councils.

The headteacher of Bweyale Senior Secondary School expressed gratitude towards URA for engaging with the students and providing valuable educational materials. He echoed Kakeeto’s sentiments, encouraging students to be responsible citizens and compliant taxpayers.

“A good citizen contributes to their country’s growth and development, which is achieved through consistent and full tax payments,” he stated.

This initiative highlights the importance of fostering a tax-compliant mindset among the youth, which is essential for the future prosperity of Uganda.
