Following incessant reports from the newly deployed informers about errant smugglers plying their dirty trade without a care in the world up in Bulambuli district, the URA Mbale Customs Enforcement team considered mounting an operation in the area.
The main areas of interest were Muyembe and Bunambutye towns. Kenyan products were finding their way into shops and stalls without going through the proper customs clearance channels. Over the weekend, the team covertly executed reconnaissance to corroborate the reports.
Yesterday, November 2, 2023, with backup, the team took to Muyembe and Bunambutye as early as 6:00 a.m. for a dawn raid. While recovering the contraband from the various consolidation spots, Intel came in about a suspected cement smuggler descending the Kapchorwa slopes.
The team ‘kwetegad‘ strategically, and the truck drove itself into their gentle embrace. The operation yielded the following:
