Kyotera councilor exposed in smuggling racket

The penalties that come with smuggling are perhaps the least of worries for a one Lukwata, the Local council one chairman of Kinyankore village in Kyotera district. He is not about to blur his ambition of the “get-rich-quick” mission with smuggling.

On Tuesday, the Masaka customs team netted him after receiving reports of his continuous association to a group of other notorious smugglers in the region.

Before he was intercepted, Lukwata was engaged on phone requesting to have a search of his stores, an idea he rejected. From reports, Lukwata had no prior appointment of anyone visiting his village.

“After a lot of negotiations, threats and police involvement, Lukwata accepted to open the store,” Simon Ssentale explained.

In his store, a number of smuggled assorted items where recovered. These included;30 cartons of santa lucia,5 cartons of bic pens,1 carton of ivory sweets, 2 cartons of beution crème, 27 packets of diproson, 12 pieces of clair,16 cartons of Afrocare perfume, 23 cartons of petroleum jelly, 8 cartons of family care and 1 carton of body luxe petroleum jelly.
