URA to enhance efforts in combating illicit alcohol trade

By Kamugisha Kabahweza Allan

The Commissioner General has reaffirmed URA’s commitment to curbing the trade of illicit alcohol in the country to allow fair competition of legal entities in the market.

John Musinguzi made this commitment during Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL)’s courtesy visit at the URA headquarters in Nakawa on Tuesday.

He noted that URA has enhanced efforts to combat the illicit alcohol trade, which usually does not comply with Digital Tax Stamps (DTS).

“We are doing our best to combat trade in illicit alcohol though we have a challenge of identifying where this illicit alcohol is made from,” Musinguzi said.

It was highlighted during the meeting that companies dealing in illicit alcohol are not registered with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), hence derailing efforts to curb the production of that alcohol.

On UBL, Musinguzi appreciated their contribution to national development and called for more collaboration to support URA’s vision of transforming to a revenue service for economic independence.

Andrew Kilonzo, UBL’s Managing Director, applauded URA for the collaboration and assistance rendered whenever contacted and pledged to stay tax compliant.

“Thank you for listening to taxpayers’ queries and providing solutions meant to develop the taxpayers and Uganda as a whole. This fosters collaboration, which results in payment of due taxes for the development of the country,” he noted.

The courtesy visit was intended to introduce new UBL staff to URA management.
