Two commuter taxis have been impounded for transporting smuggled goods in Mpondwe, Kasese district.
The taxis registration numbers UAZ 477N and UBF 216K were seized in operations conducted by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in the areas of Kabiliti, Karambi, Lubhiliha, and Rutoto last week.
According to officials, several smuggled goods, including bales of printed Kitenge, cartons of Jack Daniel’s, Black Label whisky, and numerous cosmetic and skincare products, were recovered from the taxis.
Also impounded during the operations were motorcycles registration numbers UFA 949W, UEX 723V, UFR 326P, and UFK 572R.
as stipulated in section 199 of the East African Community Customs Act of 2004, as amended, the owners of the taxis and motorcycles face a fine of up to USD 5,000.
These operations underscore the URA’s commitment to protecting legitimate trade and levelling the playing field. The public is encouraged to report suspicious trade practices.
