URA customs staff treat cancer patients to Christmas

By Jacinta Obore Mirembe

After delivering early Christmas gifts to the little ones at the Oasis of Life Orphanage in Nateete, the field services team, joined by their counterparts from the office of the Commissioner of Customs, took essential items to patients at the Uganda Cancer Institute.

The assorted items, including detergents and foodstuffs, came as a relief to the over 50 patients, some of whom will spend the festive season at the institute.

“Thank you for the generosity; we shall surely be able to celebrate this festive season with smiles on our faces,” said Nalongo, a breast cancer patient and one of the recipients.

According to a caretaker at the institute, some patients under their care are abandoned by their families while others are forced to spend Christmas in the hospital because they cannot afford to return home.

Fiona Nyamurungi Tubeine, the Manager of Warehousing at URA, empathized with the patients and underscored the value of giving back.

“It is a privilege for us to give back to our fellow countrymen when they face an impasse. And we pray for you to get better and healthier.”

This donation is part of URA’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative that happens annually. This year, URA staff have donated to communities in Mpondwe, Mbale, Kireka, and Nsonga, among others.
