Hoima leaders urge URA to boost taxpayer education

By Kamugisha Kabahweza Allan

Local leaders in Hoima have called on the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to intensify taxpayer education and sensitization efforts to combat smuggling and promote economic growth.
Speaking at the Customs Baraza organized by URA at Kolping Hotel in Hoima, the Resident City Commissioner Badru Mugabi emphasized the need to educate the public on the importance of taxes in developing the country. “Many people engage in smuggling due to ignorance about the role of taxes. We need to involve local leaders and educate them on their role in revenue mobilization,” Mugabi said.

Godfrey Muhumuza, the Proprietor of Bwendero Dairies, echoed Mugabi’s sentiments, urging URA to update taxpayers on new tax laws passed every year.

“URA should put in more effort to educate the public about these changes,” Muhumuza stated.

Gordon Mutungi, the Western Region Customs Supervisor responded by highlighting URA’s increased educational efforts through tax barazas and multimedia talk shows.

“We prefer engaging and educating to change the mindset and stop smuggling,” Mutungi explained.

The meeting also saw the RCC urge agencies to crack down on smugglers, who affect legitimate traders and manufacturers. He advised URA to collaborate with security agencies to enhance border surveillance and curb smuggling.

Mugabi cautioned traders against importing contraband items like lotions containing hydroquinone and mercury, citing health risks and the need for URA to enforce bans on such products.

By emphasizing taxpayer education and collaboration, Hoima leaders aim to promote economic growth, combat smuggling, and foster a culture of tax compliance. ‎
