URA intercepts contraband worth UGX 41.3 million

By John Olowo

In a recent operation, URA officers exposed a sophiscated smuggling network that had attempted to flood the market with contraband goods. The four-day covert operation in the central business district of Kampala netted a massive haul of illicit items, dealing a significant blow to the smugglers dubious activities.

The items seized included; 17,463 square meters of fabric material, 660 kilograms of Kitenge material, 288,000 milliliters of Body lotions and 698,4000 milliliters of Energy Drinks and Basmati Rice were collected.

According to Armstrong Turyakira, the Supervisor of the operation, the smugglers had attempted to conceal their goods in other creative ways, including using a fake broken-down vehicle registration number UBJ 118Z and also hiding items in sacks of Irish potatoes.

Despite these cunning tactics employed by smugglers, their attempts to conceal goods were no match to URA ‘s sophisticated intelligence.

“Our team ‘s vigilance was key in ensuring the plans of the smugglers were foiled to ensure Uganda ‘s economy is secure,” Turyakira said.

Also as part of URA ’s continued anti-smuggling operations countrywide, a number of similar rackets have been unearthed to protect society against harmful products to encourage fair competition.

“Goods if smuggled into the country, they do not pay tax and are sold cheaper than those that pay taxes,” Turyakira emphasized on how smuggling costs the country.

URA therefore urges the public to report any suspicious trade practices in their areas, which is crucial to creating a level playing field for all legitimate traders.
