The Tax Education (TE) Unit put boots on the ground and engaged traders in a door-to-door visitation of traders within Kisekka Market, a hotbed of business activity within the Central Business District (CBD). They aimed at rallying business people to attend today’s workshop, which is intended to bridge knowledge gaps between the revenue body and the traders.
The team also pitch camped in front of Nabukeera Arcade. Muwonge Joshua, the team lead for the expedition, said the place is “strategically located” at the entrance of the arcade, and this would in turn make it convenient for the traders to be part of the engagement.
Michael Masembe, the Manager of Tax Education, said that the workshops will have a special emphasis on the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solution (EFRIS), the Digital Tax Stamps (DTS), and the Rental Tax obligations.
“The sessions are designed to assist participants on any challenges that they may encounter in their adherence to the tax obligations and also to generate feedback, especially regarding required improvements regarding tax education,” said Masembe.
Kisekka Market is located within the jurisdiction of Block L; this block is the last of the 12 blocks, ranging from Block A to L, created by URA within Kampala Metropolitan for easy management and administration.
Muwonge said that the engagements within Block L started Thursday of last week, the 7th day after URA harmonized arrangements with the area’s local leaders. The sessions go on until Thursday of this week.
Muwonge also revealed that the team encountered mild resistance in the inaugural stages of the engagements, but this wore off as the team continued to share with the traders.
“They were a bit resistant in the initial stages, but we employed a calm tone and polite nature, and over time, they warmed onto us and gave us an audience,” said Joshua.
