Uganda Revenue Authority has foiled a smuggling feat and intercepted 2,040 mobile phones in Mayuge district.

Philip Ofubo, a customs officer at URA Jinja station narrated that they received credible intelligence about a one Isma.

“On Sunday night, we swung into action upon getting credible intelligence about a one Isma known for smuggling phones via Lake Victoria and intercepted the smugglers at a home in Bugadde town council, Kityerera sub-county, Mayuge where they had offloaded the phones from a tipper truck,” he explained.

He said that the suspect, a one Isma, upon seeing URA’s surveillance vehicle, took off leaving behind a Toyota Noah registration UBN 384Q fully loaded with 34 cartons of feature phones totaling 2,040.

“We are tracing for the said Isma with the intent of causing him to account for his dubious dealings and charge him with smuggling under the EACCMA,” said Ofubo.

According to sections 199(iii) and 200 of the East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA), the owner of a means of conveyance used in smuggling is liable to a fine not exceeding USD 5,000.

Offense management is ongoing.
