Stakeholders preach tax compliance and planning in business

By Niyonshima Joshua

The Ag. CLSBA Stella Nyapendi participated in the “Breaking Barriers to trade” conference held at the Sheraton hotel today where she encouraged taxpayers to develop a positive attitude towards paying taxes.

She noted that URA is a client-centric institution and highlighted the initiatives implemented by the tax body to support taxpayers.

“As the URA, even when you have a dispute with us, we have a mechanism known as the alternative dispute resolution. If you think your issue has been poorly handled before you go to court, we can first hear you out. Our interest as URA is to allow businesses to grow and generate more revenue,” Nyapendi noted.

The conference, which was held under the theme “understanding the world of legal and tax compliance and how to make it work for you,” attracted dignitaries, including the State Minister of Finance for Investment and Privatization, Hon. Evelyn Anite, who advised business proprietors to maintain proper records and file returns.

“Filing returns is not about money. Even when you are making losses, you can file a nil return. Be organized and file returns to avoid being disorganized by the taxman,” she advised.

Pheona Nabasa Gladys, former President of the Uganda Law Society, echoed the tax compliance call advising business owners to plan for taxes.

She emphasized the importance of business formalization noting that it eases access to business credit, tax incentives and other benefits.

Under the auspices of the Global Influence Club, this year’s conference attracted market shapers and thought leaders from key businesses in the country and policymakers. Other key issues addressed were business branding, marketing and practicing integrity in business.
