Mbale enforcement intercepts smugglers in an “unusual” style

Last week on Wednesday, the URA enforcement team based in Mbale decided to operate in the wee hours of the night as they waited for suspected smugglers.

The tactic of operating in the night worked for the team because in no time, the first truck loaded with 25 bales of used clothes was impounded.

An hour later the team received another call of a truck loaded with smuggled goods. Immediately, a team was deployed and another truck was intercepted carrying 144 bags of smuggled cement-Simba brand from Kenya.

The trucks were driven and parked at the URA offices in Mbale to assess them for advanced income tax and also verify the cement. It is now a requirement for cement to have digital stamps as one of the gazetted products.

In a mini-phone interview, Luke Kivumbi, the Incharge of Mbale Enforcement station revealed that by yesterday[Tuesday], the truck of cement had paid the due tax and was released unlike that of used clothes.
