Uganda Revenue Authority has impounded assorted smuggled items from a shop in Koboko town.
URA Customs officials, helped by Uganda Police and UPDF on Tuesday broke into one of the stores of the suspected smuggler and recovered 118 bombas of ORIS cigarettes, 72 bombas of Supermatch, 20 bags of rice, 19 boxes of bubble gums, 150kgs of sugar, six cartons of bar soap from DR Congo and three jerrycans of cooking oil.
Customs Officer, Philip Ofubo David explained that they got intelligence from URA informers about a shopkeeper dealing in ORIS cigarettes and other smuggled goods.
“Aware of the chaotic nature of the populace, I quickly mobilised police who lent us two patrol cars, we too picked an additional six strong UPDF officers from Maracha barracks and hit the road,” said Philip.
He noted that once they reached Koboko town, all shops were closed, an indication that traders had carried out counter intelligence on URA operations.
The operation yielded seven uncustomed motorcycles.
The shop owner is still on the run as offence management is ongoing.
