UNAA implores URA to streamline tax literature for Ugandans in the diaspora

The Uganda North American Association (UNAA) has requested URA to streamline and develop tax education literature tailored for Ugandans working and living abroad.

They also recommended for URA to put in place a desk to handle tax matters for them.

Speaking at a meeting convened to discuss ways of simplifying tax matters for Ugandans in the diaspora, Gilbert Mulaabi chairman UNAA explained that specialized information is simpler to understand suggesting platforms like webinars where individual interactions can happen.

Mulaabi also invited URA to be part of this year’s UNAA Convention in Dallas saying it’s a good opportunity to educate hundreds of Ugandans on their tax obligations.

Ugandans abroad are expected to pay tax on income as long as they have a permanent address and personal ties in Uganda regardless of their physical location.

In his remarks, Ibrahim Bbossa Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate Affairs welcomed the suggestions saying these would improve compliance and URA’s relationship with this section of taxpayers.

He also highlighted initiatives URA has put in place to simplify tax payment and improve compliance saying, “URA is undergoing a transformation to make tax administration easier and simpler through digitization of systems and processes with tools like EFRIS, DTS, a state-of-the-art contact center and publications released on incentives and exemptions.’’

Mr. Bbosa further urged the team to utilize URA’s contact center for any queries and asked for better collaboration between the two entities to achieve improved compliance from Ugandans abroad.
