URA DONATES TO KABAKA BIRTHDAY RUN IN FIGHT AGAINST AIDS

By Irene Kabakama

Uganda Revenue Authority handed over a UGX 3,750,000 cheque yesterday towards support of the Kabaka birthday run of 2022. This charity run is organized by Buganda kingdom in partnership with Airtel Uganda Limited. The other entities supporting this cause are UNAIDS, Uganda Airlines, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA), Unilever Uganda, and Umeme.

The Kabaka birthday run is a 9-year long initiative that attracts over 8,000 participants. For the past three years it’s been themed to fight against AIDS The initiative started with creating awareness on fistula and sickle cells that many looked at as witchcraft.

The theme for this year’s run is “Men against AIDS to Save the Girl Child” intended to drive awareness about HIV/AIDS and encourage men to be at the forefront by urging them to get tested, get treated and ultimately protect women against infection.

At the cheque handover ceremony, the Katikiro of Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, appreciated all participating organizations for the support towards the Kindgom’s fight against AIDS.

“The campaign against HIV requires behavioural change and sharing of information. The biggest weapon we need in this fight is information based on research that will uphold the UNAIDS mission to eliminate the virus spread by 2030. We must embark on sensitization drives through fora such as the Kabaka Birthday Run,” noted the Katikiro.

The charity run is slate to kick off on Sunday Jul 3, 2022, starting at 7:00am from Lubiri in Mengo.
